Questions About Two-Phase Treatment?
How Does Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment Work?
Two-phase treatment is a specialized process that corrects jaw and teeth issues during childhood, followed by a second phase that aligns permanent teeth in adolescence. This unique approach involves:
Phase One (Early) Treatment
The first phase usually begins between the ages of 7 and 10, when your child still has a mix of baby and permanent teeth. This early stage focuses on guiding jaw growth to ensure there is enough space for permanent teeth to erupt properly. By addressing the issues early, we can often avoid the need for more costly or complex treatments in the future.
Some common issues we address in Phase One treatment include:
- Crossbites
- Underbites or overbites
- Dental Crowding
- Narrow upper or lower dental arches
- Harmful oral habits (e.g., thumb-sucking) that affect jaw development
After this phase, there is usually a resting period where the remaining permanent teeth are allowed to erupt naturally. Our team will continue to monitor your child’s jaw growth and tooth eruption.
Phase Two Treatment
Once your child’s permanent teeth have come in (typically between ages 11 and 14), we will start with Phase Two treatment. The goal of this stage is to make sure that all the permanent teeth are properly aligned for optimal function and aesthetics. This way, your child can have a beautiful and functional smile that is meant to last a lifetime.
During this phase, we use braces or clear aligners to straighten the teeth. Once the treatment is complete, we will provide retainers that help maintain the results.
FAQs
Is two-phase treatment always necessary?
Not always. Some children may only need a single phase of treatment, but for those with severe bite issues or misalignment, this approach offers the best results.
How long does each phase last?
Phase One typically lasts 9 to 12 months. After a rest period, Phase Two may last for 12 to 24 months, depending on the complexity of the case.
Will my child need to wear retainers between phases?
In some cases, we may suggest wearing retainers or space maintainers during the resting period to maintain the results of Phase One treatment.
