Why is Early Orthodontic Care Necessary?
Early orthodontic evaluations allow us to detect signs of improper jaw growth, bite issues, crowding, or spacing concerns before they fully develop. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, children should get their first orthodontic exam around the age of 7. At this stage, they have a mix of primary and permanent teeth, making it easier to detect any potential concerns. Addressing these issues early can prevent the need for more invasive treatment later, such as extractions or jaw surgery. It also helps children understand their oral health better and maintain it with proper care.
Questions About Preventive & Early Orthodontic Treatments?
Our Preventive and Early Orthodontic Treatments
During your child’s initial orthodontic exam, Dr. Brad will assess their teeth, jaws, and bite to determine whether they can benefit from early orthodontics. Treatment options include:
Phase I Orthodontics
Phase I Orthodontics, also known as interceptive treatment, is beneficial for children typically between the ages of 7 and 10. The goal of this treatment is to correct bite issues or oral habits that could impact the normal development of your child’s teeth and jaws. It may involve the use of palatal expanders, space maintainers, or custom appliances, depending on your child’s specific needs.
Phase II Orthodontics
Once your child’s permanent teeth have erupted, typically around age 11 to 13, Phase II Orthodontics begins. This stage is focused on improving the alignment of teeth using braces or Invisalign® clear aligners. Due to the corrections made during the first phase of treatment, this phase is usually shorter and more comfortable.
Palatal Expanders
When the upper jaw is too narrow or constricted, Dr. Brad may recommend a palatal expander to widen the jaw. This appliance is especially beneficial for children with crowding or overlapping teeth. By expanding the palate at an early age, we can create the necessary space for teeth to erupt properly and may reduce the need for extractions.
Habit Appliances
Some oral habits among children, such as thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting, can affect your child’s dental development. At our practice, we offer custom habit appliances that are designed to discourage these habits. Dr. Brad includes them as a part of early orthodontic care for children to ensure their teeth and jaws develop normally.
